Stem cell therapy
How the procedure works
A minimally invasive treatment designed to help the body repair orthopedic injuries and degenerative conditions, performed in the office in a single visit.
Step by step
Your procedure, from start to finish
-
Evaluation
Dr. Movva reviews your history, imaging and exam findings to confirm you are a candidate and plan the treatment area.
-
Collection
Bone marrow, which contains stem cells, is collected from the iliac crest of the pelvis.
-
Concentration
The sample is processed in a centrifuge to create bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), containing stem cells, growth factors, and other healing components.
-
Image-guided injection
Using precise ultrasound or X-ray guidance, the concentrate is injected directly into the injured or arthritic area.
After the injection
How the cells work
Once delivered, these cells release signals that reduce inflammation, encourage tissue repair, and stimulate long-term healing. Many patients experience gradual improvement in pain and mobility over the weeks to months following the procedure.
Each treatment is performed with precision using ultrasound or X-ray guidance to ensure accurate placement, and the clinic integrates advanced imaging and lab processing to ensure precision and safety.
Recovery timeline
What to expect after treatment
All patients go home the same day. Mild soreness at the bone marrow collection site and injection areas is common for several days, as the healing process begins with a natural inflammatory response.
-
First few days
Mild soreness or stiffness is typical.
-
Weeks 2–6
Gradual improvement in pain, mobility, and daily function.
-
Months 2–6
Continued healing as stem cells and growth factors support tissue repair.
-
Your rehab plan
Dr. Movva provides a personalized rehabilitation plan to help you achieve the best possible results.
What is recovery like after treatment?
Recovery is typically much shorter than traditional orthopedic surgery. All patients go home the same day and gradually resume normal daily activities based on their physician's recommendations and individualized rehabilitation plan.
Will my pain disappear immediately?
Regenerative treatments are designed to stimulate healing rather than simply mask pain. While some patients notice early relief, most improvements occur gradually as damaged tissues repair over time.
Will I need physical therapy after my procedure?
Many patients benefit from a personalized rehabilitation or physical therapy program following treatment. Combining regenerative medicine with guided rehabilitation often supports improved strength, mobility, and long-term recovery.
Can I return to sports or exercise after the treatment?
Return to sports depends on your diagnosis, the procedure performed, and your body's healing response. Our team develops individualized recovery plans designed to help patients safely return to their desired activities as healing progresses.
How do image-guided procedures improve safety?
Ultrasound and fluoroscopic image guidance allow precise placement of regenerative therapies into the damaged tissue or joint. This level of accuracy helps improve treatment precision while minimizing unnecessary trauma to surrounding structures.
Are there risks or side effects?
Most patients experience only mild soreness, swelling, or stiffness for a few days after treatment. As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks, which your physician will discuss during your consultation along with the expected benefits based on your condition.
